The Ryder Cup

It is named 'Ryder Cup' after the man who donated the cup, Samuel Ryder. It is a bi-yearly event between the top golfers of the USA vs the top golfers of Europe. It changes venue each time it is played, each team (USA and Europe) switching between who hosts it each time. The first Ryder cup took place in 1927 is Massachusetts, USA. Each year it is on, each golf association picks a captain for each side. They then pick, in Europe's case, the leading 5 players on the world points list (based on how well they have preformed in certain events) and the next 5 not qualified for that list, and then two players chosen by the captain. For the USA, it is the top 8 on the Ryder cup list and 4 captains picks. the Ryder cup this year (2012) will take place in Medinah Country Club, Illinois, USA. the last one in Europe was in Celtic Manor Resort, Wales.

Where is Golf Most Popular?

Golf has to be most popular in the USA, this is mainly because of the size of it. It is also extremely popular in the UK and Ireland, for their size about the same popularity. It is also popular around continental Europe in countries such as Sweden, Italy, Germany etc. They all have big names on the European tours such as Martin Kaymer (Germany), Robert Karlsson (Sweden), and Edoardo and Fernando Molinari (Italy).
